-
About this clinic:
The Warrior's Way teaches how to focus attention impeccably during the climbing process, especially when you are most apt to seek escape. By doing this you enter into and act out climbing challenges with all of your available power.
-
Areas covered [you'll learn to]:
*Improve self-observation skills
*Break a climb into smaller risk events
*Focus attention when stopped/resting/assessing
*Focus attention when actually climbing
*Improve problem-solving skills
*Reduce fear, and more
-
Content of the class:
You'll be doing climbing exercises on toprope.
-
What to expect:
You'll begin by breaking a climb into decision points, places where you can stop, rest, and assess. Next you'll identify how to focus attention when stopped/resting/assessing. Finally, you'll focus attention well when actually climbing.
-
Requirement for class:
You do need to know the fundamentals of knots, belaying, basic climbing skills, and previous lead climbing experience is helpful.
-
Equipment Needed:
Harness, shoes, rope, belay device, and a helmet (if you have one).
-
Investment: A donation to NRAC that you are comfortable with
-
Registration:
Choose from one of three one-day clinics (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday)
-
Comment from Sterling:
"We are very excited to be teaming up this year with Arno Ilgner, owner of Desiderata Institute and Author of "The Rock Warrior Way," to offer his Warrior's Way Espresso Clinic! The Warrior's Way mental fitness clinic teaches you how to focus attention during the climbing process, especially when you are most apt to seek escape (how many of you can relate to this?)."

You'll learn how to:
*Develop self-awareness
*Stay centered
*Fall
*Improve commitment
*Improve fluidity
*Reduce doubts
*Improve problem-solving skills
*Reduce fear, and more!
-
Content of the clinic:
You'll be doing climbing exercises on mock lead at Joshua Tree. The exercises will begin on moderately difficult routes, then falling practice, more moderate routes, and finally a challenging climb.
-
What to expect:
First, you'll begin by learning how to perform risk assessment and break a climb into smaller sections (decision points).
Second, you'll become more aware of the thought content in your mind.
Third, you'll practice falling (in small increments and only as much as the student wants).
Fourth, you'll work on climbing more fluidly and reduce intruding thoughts.
Finally, you'll learn how to prepare and commit at these decision points.
-
Requirements for class: It is helpful if you've read "The Rock Warrior's Way" book, but it isn't absolutely necessary. I have a pdf handout that I can email you so you can become familiar with the Warrior's Way concepts. This clinic seems to be best for those who have hit a plateau, experienced frustration, fear, loss of motivation, or other mental fitness issues. You do need to know the fundamentals of knots, belaying, and basic climbing skills.
-
Clinic limited to 8 participants, so sign up and reserve your space today!
-
Description of clinic
-
A challenging climb can be mentally overwhelming until we learn how to plan well, assess the consequences accurately, make a deliberate decision to engage the climb if it is appropriate, and commit wholeheartedly to it. This clinic will help you do all of these things. You’ll learn how to chunk down a climb into smaller risk events, identify consequences, make appropriate risk decisions based on learning, and commit fully to your choices.
-
It is helpful to have some climbing experience and know the basics knots, belaying, and climbing skills. We’ll do some discussion but the clinic will consist mostly of climbing exercises.
-
Registration Info: Go to http://www.mountaingear.com/RedRock/
